In 1947, he married Jocelyn "Richenda" Gammell (née Pease) (1925–2003), the daughter of the geneticist Michael Pease (a son of Edward R. Pease) and his wife Helen Bowen Wedgwood, eldest daughter of the first Lord Wedgwood (see also Darwin-Wedgwood family). They have one son and five daughters:
