Caput mortuum (plural capita mortua) is a Latin term whose literal meaning is "dead head" or "worthless remains",[1] used in alchemy and also as the name of a pigment. In alchemy, caput mortuum (alternately called nigredo) signified a useless substance left over from a chemical operation such as sublimation and the epitome of decline and decay; alchemists represented this residue with a stylized human skull, a literal death's head.

"What united the original Provincetown bohemians, playwrights and painters both, was the idea "that Art was the great universal refreshment." Curiously, for such dissimilar folk, this is what united the founders of the Grateful Dead. "What we were interested in was art," recalls Alan Trist, who was nineteen when he was his father, Eric Trist, a Visiting Fellow at Stanford who founded the Tavistock Institute in London, arrived in Palo Alto in 1960. "It was the business of being an artist that totally captured Jerry and Hunter," he states, pointing out to me, when we meet at the bagel shop near the Dead's office in San Rafael..."

"One consequence of American Beauty was the return of Alan Trist, Garcia and Hunter's buddy from Palo Alto. When he'd left California, he'd attended Cambridge, eventually marrying Robert Hunter's friend from the same Palo Alto circle., Christie Bourne. Through the sixties, Christie maintained a close friendship with both men, which kept the connection alive. After the Hollywood Festival show in 1970, Alan had gotten together with Hunter and McIntire, and eventually Jon had offered him the job of running Ice Nine, the Dead's music publishing firm. Alan faced an interesting quandary. He was then working with the Tavistock Institute, which studied social change, and now he had the opportunity to live it." pg. 383

In the middle 1960's a gigantic wave of cultural and political change, originating in San Francisco, California, swept over much of the United States. The Grateful Dead rock band was an important part of this movement spawned a subculture known as the Deadheads, loyal fans who followed them from concert to concert, bought their records and emulated what they considered to be their lifestyle. Although the band ascribed to the descriptor of "sex, drugs, rock and roll," we know that the band members were skilled musicians. Some of them had classical music backgrounds, and the entire band would sometimes obtain tickets for the famed San Francisco Opera, one time sitting in on all four operas of Richard Wagner's Ring cycle.
The Grateful Dead began performing in 1965, were the featured band at author Ken Kesey's "Acid Test" parties in California, and participated in various festivals that year. The events and festivals were known for the presence of LSD, a powerful psychoactive drug that had been used to study such psychological phenomena as perception and hallucinations, as well as being used in psychotherapy. Once the recreational use of LSD spread, the U.S. government closed down the research studies and imposed draconian fines on manufacturers of the substance.
Jerry Garcia, the best-known member of the group, once told Stanley how the name originated, a description that occurs in several published accounts including Song of the Siren. "Back in the late days of the Acid Tests, we were looking for a name. We'd abandoned 'The Warlocks'; it didn't fit anymore. One day we were all over at Phil Lesh's house getting high. He had a big Oxford dictionary, opened it, and there was 'grateful dead,' those words juxtaposed. It was one of those moments, you know, like everything else on the page went blank, diffuse, just sort of oozed away, and there was GRATEFUL DEAD, big black letters edged all around in gold, blasting out at me, such a stunning combination. So I said, 'How about Grateful Dead?' And that was it."
The group lived in Los Angeles for several months with Agustus Owsley Stanley III, the supplier of the black market's highest quality LSD. The group returned to San Francisco in the middle of 1966 and lived in a musical commune for a period of time between 1967 and 1969. The band released several records during that time, parts of which were designed to be heard while the listener was in an altered state of mind. In 1969, following a raid by police officers, the group abandoned its San Francisco house and moved to separate houses in the countryside. But it was while they were in San Francisco that they had their first encounters with RT.
In songs like "Casey Jones," "Dark Star," and "Truckin'," the Grateful Dead's "acid rock" music displayed its roots in jazz, country and western music, rhythm and blues, and folk music. But they also borrowed musical idioms and instruments from Native American, Latin American, classical, and electronic music. It was rock and roll, but the rocks originated in the Earth, and the roll was reminiscent of Rolling Thunder's thunder.
One of RT's friends in the community of rock music was Barry Melton, a lawyer who has a long history of advocacy for Native Americans and other ethnic groups. But Melton is better known as the cofounder and original lead guitarist of the rock band Country Joe and the Fish. He appears on all the Country Joe and the Fish recordings and wrote many of the songs that the band recorded. Melton described RT as "a regular guy, without airs or pretense. But I was really impressed by his extensive knowledge about world medicine."
Melton discovered that RT had studied not only the Cherokee and Shoshone medicine traditions but those of the Paiute and Sioux as well. Melton met RT through Mickey Hart and later helped RT with some legal services. He was present when Mickey was cutting his solo album, Rolling Thunder, on which RT starts the album with a traditional prayer to the Four Directions. The prayer was simple yet direct.
RT had great respect for the Hopis and often cited the ancient Hopi prophecy: "The day will come when the children of the white man will begin to dress like Indians, when they will begin to wear long hair, beads, and headbands. That will be the generation from which will come the first true non-Indian friends." RT felt that the Hopis were the principle custodians of the traditional American Indian spiritual doctrines and considered David Monongye, one of his revered teachers, to be the custodian of other Hopi prophecies and secrets. If RT had taken David Monongye to a Grateful Dead concert, a glimpse at the audience of long-haired, beaded fans might have served as an ample fulfillment of the prophecy.

The richly textured and multicultural nature of the Grateful Dead's music and lyrics stimulated a group of scholars to create the Grateful Dead Caucus, which meets yearly in conjunction with the Southwest Popular American Culture Association. This transdisciplinary group is composed of ethnomusicologists, psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, historians, physicians, and students of business theory, communications theory, critical studies, and library science, among other disciplines.
The group considers me its godfather because I wrote the first scholarly article about the band, in 1973. This was a report on the experiment in telepathic dreams discussed in chapter 4 (in which the band played in Port Chester, New York, and the audience was directed to use whatever telepathic powers they could muster to influence the dreams of a psychic who was sleeping at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn). I conducted experiments in dream telepathy at the medical center for ten years before accepting a teaching position at Saybrook University in San Francisco. The experiment was fairly successful and was published in the Journal of the American Society of Psychosomatic Dentistry and Medicine.
Also in 1973, I was in New York City for a parapsychological convention at the same time that RT was giving a workshop there. We arranged to meet for lunch, and I brought some friends with me. They included Celina Madera, a parapsychologist from Puerto Rico, Robert McGarey, the son of Dr. William McGarey, the physician who had worked with RT at the Council Grove healing session, and Michael Bova, the art therapist and 'psychic healer" who had joined me in my first sweat lodge ceremony on RT's land. RT brought one of his sons, Buffalo Horse, with him.
Buffalo Horse told me that he had been spending the summer in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco in the hippie era of the 1960's. He happened to be a neighbor of the Grateful Dead when they were living together, commune style, in an old mansion, and introduced them to his father. So it was Buffalo Horse who made the connection between Mickey Hart and RT. Mickey Hart was not an original member of the band, but he brought knowledge of non-Western music with him to enrich the group's already eclectic heritage.
Through my connections with friends in academia and holistic healing, RT had obtained invitations to lecture at the State University of West Georgia and the Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach, the repository of the psychic readings given by Edgar Cayce when he was in a self-induced altered state.
In addition, I was able to bring RT to the annual meeting of the Association for Humanistic Psychology when it met in Reno, Nevada in September 1973. I was presiding over a special showing of a documentary, Psychics, Saints, and Scientists, in which I made a camera appearance. When Mickey heard that RT was going to attend, he drove over the border of California, and the conference participants were delighted to have a surprise celebrity guest.
Both RT and Mickey discussed their own parapsychological experiences with the group, much to the delight of the audience. But Mickey had an additional surprise. He presented me with a copy of his first solo album, Rolling Thunder. RT had already received his copy of the LP in the postal mail.
"There was a time when I was quite suspicious of scientists. I'll admit this. Like when I met Stanley Krippner for the first time at Mickey Hart's place. Mickey is one of the Grateful Dead and has been associated with rock music and the rock people. I've known those people for many years. And it was through the efforts of Mickey Hart that I met Stanley. For some reason, they wanted to bring us together. I never push to meet anyone, and I admit that at that time I was in no hurry to meet anybody. They had wanted me to meet a lot of different people and I had been disappointed a few times in some religious leaders they wanted me to meet. So when they came and told me he wanted me to meet a man named Stanley Krippner, at first I was skeptical. And I was even a little suspicious when I first met him. And I know we both tested each other.
From my pagan or primitive point of view, I wondered if a person with scientific training could be sincere in studying the other world. That was the reason for my skepticism. It wasn't a personal thing, I admit, because I couldn't find any fault with Stanley personally. As a matter of fact, I liked him from the beginning when I first met him. But I think it was the scientific terms---the high language and words that I didn't always understand.
I know that Stanley felt a bit skeptical too, and he knew many of my thoughts the same as I knew many of his thoughts. And I knew, even though he didn't say so, that he thought he was meeting with a pagan and a savage. And most people would think that these two---the savage and the scientist---couldn't be one and the same and probably couldn't get along together.
But I've found since that time that many of the findings of parapsychologists reflect the teachings that many of our people have known from old civilizations, ancient times, and even other worlds. Much knowledge has been handed down to us about such things as how the pyramids were built, how to reverse the law of gravity through magic and through mathematics, how to communicate with other people in dreams, how to use electrical force that you find in all living things, until the people are able to handle this wisdom without destroying themselves and without destroying the world."
RT would often refer to himself as "a savage." In on of his lectures, he commented, "Yes, I'm a savage. I like children, I like animals and birds, and at my age I still like women." Further, "I'm not a Red Apple---Indian on the outside but a white man on the inside. The Red Apples claim to have been educated, but they were really brainwashed to be ashamed of being Indians, so they forgot the old ways and the real values."
Now, some might still question whether or not Jerry and Phil could have been into the arcane subjects or if maybe it was just a passing fancy. - Well, I personally visited with Hank Harrison in May of 2009, shortly after my visit with Lee Quarnstrom. I interviewed Hank in a non-formal way. We discussed many things of mutual interest. In our conversation, I asked Hank, frankly, "who could have been the person who designed this piece?," (showing him pictures of the Warlocks Babbs Poster shown above), and asked him outright, "who was so interested in secret societies or the Masons or the Illuminati that they could have drawn this?" -- Hanks reply to me, and I quote, "We were all into that stuff. I'm a Mason, and my family are Masons going way back, and Phil Lesh is a Mason and so is Phil's family." , I replied, "Phil Lesh is a Mason? What degree? Hank replied, "he never got that far, never had the time, but he is a 3rd degree, Master Mason" -- I went on, "does he keep that covered up, or care if anyone knows that?" Hank replied, "No, I don't think so. I thought lots of people knew. I'm proud of being a Mason, and I don't hide it, and I don't think Phiul does either, but I doubt he actually talks about to people. It was way in the past." - So I asked him more about all this, and Hank mentioned, "I would go to the Oxford Library and borrow book on the occult, alchemy, the grail legends, and mystery schools etc., the Dead would read it, eat it up, and I would return them, and bring back more for them to read." -- So, that pretty much explains why Jerry and Phil would have chosen to use the "Eye of Horus" as a symbol in the early Warlocks Acid Test days.

Many young people became “dead heads” after Jerry Garcia’s “Grateful Dead”. Keith writes:
“An FBI internal memo from 1968 mentions the employment of the Grateful Dead as an avenue ‘to channel youth dissent and rebellion into more benign and non-threatening directions.’ (They) performed a vital service in distracting many young persons into drugs and mysticism, rather than politics.” (p.179)

March 2012 – San Francisco Weekly mag – comments section:
The connection between Jerry Garcia and the FBI was mentioned by Jim Keith in his book about the Tavistock Institute “Mind Control World Control” (1997). The footnotes need citation. You can read this excerpt directly from the book for yourself if you do a Google search.
“According to a 1968 FBI memorandum, Jerry Garcia, the leader of the Grateful Dead, was employed ‘to channel youth dissent and rebellion into more benign and non-threatening directions.'” (8) (p. 97)
And again this connection was mentioned in almost exactly the same words later in the same book: “The first member of the Grateful Dead to take LSD, Robert Hunter, did so under the auspices of a “government sponsored” Stanford University drug study. An FBI internal memo from 1968 also mentions the employment of Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead as an avenue “to channel youth dissent and rebellion into more benign and non-threatening directions.” It is obvious with their “laid-back”, non-politically involved stance, the Grateful Dead have performed a vital service in distracting many young persons into drugs and mysticism, rather than politics. Whether they knew they were performing the service is a matter of argument.” (11) (p. 179)

The Grateful Dead And Acid

In the 1960s, an unidentified FBI agent wrote that “LSD originates from San Francisco through The Grateful Dead.” Despite this allegation, the FBI apparently had very little knowledge of the future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees — the 1971 declassified memo accusing them of trafficking appends the band’s name with “It would appear that this is a rock group of some sort” — another Fed agreed to label the rock band as “dangerous” and on par “with organized crime.”
Kesey was joined by Richard Alpert and Jerry Garcia. Out of this setting came the Merry Pranksters and the Grateful Dead. Kesey’s Pranksters were famous for administering the “Electric Kool Aid Acid Test” to large groups of adolescents attending rock concerts given by the Grateful Dead, or otherwise in touch with the Pranksters, as the group toured the United States.
(The Grateful Dead still operate in an intelligence capacity. In 1976, they were dispatched to perform in Egypt upon the request of Dumas Malone, an expert of the National War College.) 62
