Not only that, he was my undergraduate advisor and the supervisor of my Senior honor's thesis (don't forget I got a B.A. in Archeology there in 1980).

As I mentioned, a book that you would probably enjoy is Coe's autobiography:

Final Report: An Archaeologist Excavates His Past (2006)

(Note that you can pick up a used copy cheap.)

He worked in military intelligence in Japan during the Korean War and has seen a lot of fascinating history.  He's a lot of fun and an excellent human being.

[...]

That's doesn't surprise me at all.  Michael Coe was a Harvard undergrad and graduate student (his Ph.D. advisor was also mine: Gordon R. Willey).  He was also one of the leading Mesoamericanists of his day, and sympathetic to the notion that the ancient Mexicans were using mushrooms and other substances.  Did you know that Coe was the one who discovered that the Mayas used enemas in their quest for altered states of consciousness?

It's always amazed me that conspiracy theorists have missed the remarkable associations within the academy, especially at Yale, Harvard, and Princeton.  Those were the bastions of the rich and powerful.

I don't think anyone has yet remarked on the fact that the association of 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ajaw 3 K'ank'in with Armageddon was first made by a former CIA operative.  Hmmm...

Here's a link to an online copy of Burroughs' edition of TIME magazine:

http://denniscooper-theweaklings.blogspot.com/2007/02/william-burroughs-time-1965-part-1.html

It's a complex piece.  "The November 30, 1962 issue of Time was chosen, because the magazine reviewed the Grove Press edition of Naked Lunch in an article entitled 'King of the YADS' (Young American Disaffiliates). The looming face of Mao symbolizing the threat of Red China adds an aura of nuclear disaster."

Check out the first column on this page:

Burroughs was writing about "the end of the world also a definite future date" as indicated by the Maya calendar a year before Coe's book.

Cheers,

John
