Neural Networks
Neural networks are multi-layered algorithmic structures that power deep learning and much of today’s generative AI (including large language models).
Key points:
- They are inspired by the interconnected neurons of the human brain as a model for processing data.
- The concept dates back to the 1940s, but only became truly powerful with the rise of GPUs from the video game industry.
- GPUs made it practical to train much deeper networks (many more layers), dramatically improving performance.
- Neural network–based systems now excel in areas like speech recognition, self-driving navigation, and drug discovery.
