1952-04-18: Pioneer Mansion Being Razed

This is the way a 70-year-old mansion of Cheney appeared a few days ago. Today there is much less of it, as workmen have advanced with their dismantling job.

Located at the corner of F and 5th streets opposite the southwest corner of the EWC campus, the structure was for years the home of Daniel F. Percival, Cheney banker, real estate man, and one-time mayor. In its early years, through the 1880s and '90s, the home was one of the finest in Cheney and in this part of the country. Some rumors are that it was the first residence in Cheney to house a bathtub. A beautiful array of shrubbery surrounded the house in those days.

For some years the place has served as an apartment house for college student families and others. Former Governor Clarence D. Martin purchased it a few years ago and is now clearing the ground. He states that plans for future use of the lots are as yet indefinite.

Daniel F. Percival operated the Bank of Cheney, an institution which failed early in the century after many years of service. He also was a member of the real estate firm of Percival & Andrus, agents for Northern Pacific railroad lands, who conducted colonization of lands here and in the Palouse country.
