FROM PAGE 17:
Cohen discuses his first Vision Quest; I have referred to them as "Spirit Quests."
FROM PAGE 146:
Purpose of Spirit Quest is to: "retrieve information, guidance, or solution to problems or illness; attract and commune with helping spirits and spiritual power"
FROM PAGE 251:
- VISION QUEST IS "INDIVIDUAL CEREMONY"
- "Native American ceremonies help to maintain the balance of life on Earth"
FROM PAGE 359:
- "This spontaneous Vision Quest is not always advisable or safe. The Vision Quest requires a high degree of emotional stability so that the seeker is not overwhelmed by sacred powers. The experience can be so powerful and awe-inspiring that there is a danger of losing rather than gaining orientation and direction. A saying of mythologist Joseph Campbell is worth remembering: 'The mystic swims on the waters of the unconscious; a schizophrenic drowns in them' (personal communication, 1980). Native American elders have already traversed the sacred terrain. Their guidance and interpretation provide context and meaning and may help the seeker overcome obstacles to a vision's fulfillment."
