Sweetgrass

`From Page 129:

"It is best to gather sage and cedar in nature, Pick only as much as you need, thanking the plant and being careful not to pull the roots. Never deplete an area of the plant. Always leave enough whole plants and roots for re-growth and reseeding. You can find sweetgrass braids and bundles of smudging plants at powwows and some Native art markets. Unless you are Native American or have special permission from Native people, you should not pick sweetgrass, which is endangered in many areas of North America."

"After the plant is dried, place some in an open natural container such as a shell or a stone with a natural hollow (coffee cans or study ashtrays will do in an emergency). Open a window or door slightly, so that unneeded forces can find an exit. It is essential that there will be a way for air to escape to the outside whenever you smudge."
