Bright Angel Trail
Bright Angel Trail – Overview
- Location: South Rim, starts near Bright Angel Lodge in Grand Canyon Village
- Type: Main “corridor” trail, heavily used and well-maintained
- Good for: First-time Grand Canyon hikers who want a graded, signed, patrolled trail with water (seasonal at some points)
Key Distances & Turnaround Points (Approx.)
- 1.5 Mile Resthouse – ~3 mi round-trip, ~1,120 ft (340 m) descent/ascent
- 3 Mile Resthouse – ~6 mi round-trip, ~2,120 ft (646 m) descent/ascent
- Indian Garden – ~9 mi round-trip, ~3,060 ft (933 m) descent/ascent
- Plateau Point (from Indian Garden) – ~12 mi round-trip total, big views of the river
- River / Bright Angel Campground (Phantom Ranch area) – full rim-to-river, typically done as part of an overnight
Difficulty & When to Hike
- Difficulty: Strenuous if you go beyond 3 Mile Resthouse; the climb back up is the crux
- Best seasons: Spring and fall; winter can have ice near the top; summer heat is dangerous below the rim
- Start times: For warm months, begin pre-dawn or very early morning
Water & Facilities (Check NPS for Current Status)
- Water spigots usually at: trailhead, 1.5 Mile Resthouse, 3 Mile Resthouse, Indian Garden
- Composting toilets at: 1.5 Mile, 3 Mile, Indian Garden
- Water lines can be down—never assume; verify on NPS trail updates the day before
Safety & Tips
- The hike feels easy going down and very hard coming up—choose turnaround time, not distance
- Use the rule of thirds for time: 1/3 down, 2/3 back up
- Carry:
- At least 2–3 L water per person for shorter hikes; more for hot days or longer distances
- Electrolytes, salty snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, UPF clothing)
- Layers for shoulder seasons (cool at rim, warm below)
- Watch for:
- Heat exhaustion/heat stroke signs
- Ice/slick sections near the rim in winter/shoulder seasons
Itinerary Ideas
- First visit / half day:
- Hike to 1.5 Mile Resthouse, long break, and back
- Strong hikers / cool temps:
- 3 Mile Resthouse or Indian Garden day hike (start early)
- Backpacking:
- Down Bright Angel to Indian Garden or Bright Angel Campground, up Bright Angel or out via South Kaibab as part of a loop (with permits)
Photo/Experience Notes
- Morning light can be nice on the way down; afternoon/early evening can give warm canyon walls on the way back up
- Frequent mule traffic—step to the inside edge when they pass and follow mule wrangler instructions
- Good “intro to the inner canyon” feel while still having infrastructure and patrols
