Creativity
Options include many things from the following and more :
- Rubics Cube
- Complete the drawing
- Deivide the square into 4 equal sizes and shape
- Games of may types and we will take many of them here
- Rope Shapes
- The Self Raising Stick
Rubics Cube
The wonderful cube offers options but maybe I should learn how to do it. Even though I can’t there will be someone in the group who can OR we will all learn or try together.
Complete the drawing
Here the drawing in the page that is given to the student has a line of text at the top.
In one of the option sheets there is a small triange and on the top it says simply “Complete the drawing”
On another it has the same triange but says “Complete the drawing correctly” so it really depends how much attention is given and the interpritation.
The options are endless and we can have something like;
- An endless line making “some shape”, “your favourite animal”, “a maths symbol”,
- With circles only
- Using just a specific number of lines
- using other shapes
- Using mathmatical formuli

Deivide the square into 4 equal sizes and shape
You will see two images here and in the future more will be added.
A sheet of paper with equally sized squares is given to each stydent. AT the top it asks that the candidate devide as many squares as possible into four equally sized, same shaped zones.
This can be set against a time but there is no need to do so. It depends on the aim of the exercise.
Students then begin to divide the squares looking for a maximum number of options and/ or one option that can or could be applied in a limitless number of iterations.
The exercise is not only about the drawings but also about the mothods used and the flexibility of some of the results versus strictly “apply once options”
That discussion can be quite enlightening.
Games of may types and we will take many of them here
Rope Shapes
Each team are given a length of rope that has the ends tied together. A first shape is given drawn on a piece of paper, one possibility is the star of David and the team challenged to make the shape from the rope.
Once sucessfully achieved a second piece of paper is given, different shape except this cannot be achieved with the rope tied at the ends. Here we are looking for the candidate to reach outside the box and either ask if they can untie the roap or simply to untie the rope. ( They have never been told that they cannot ) - ( So are they restricting themselves with conventions that have never been put in place OR are they free thinking and acting ? )
The Self Raising Stick
This is such fun and useful in many more categories than just this one.
Required is one wooden or light weight handle for a long brush or mop.
Stand people in two rows, one either side of the handle and they each support the secion of handle infront of them with either one or two fingers.
You should be stood close as you will need to reset the height of the stick often. Keep your hand on the stich applying a very light downward pressure.
Ask the people to keep contact with the stick at all times, but, to jointky lower the stick.
The task seams simple but there is an almost certain chance that the stick will raise.
Ask why and watch the dynamic of the group.......;
- Some will offer advice
- Some will be quiet
- Everyone will try
- You reset the stick height
- Listen to the offered reasons and analyse these to understand more about the person saying whatever is said and the reactions of the other part of the team.
- You may get a leader who facilitates the aim. With us it was done by dramatically reducing the amount of movement and ordering the steps and actions.
