How to Use This Book

How to use this book:

Welcome to The Complete Book of Cancer Prevention. It’s complete because it thoroughly details the risk factors for 19 different lifestyle cancers, provides quizzes that enable you to evaluate your risk of getting the disease, and recommends specific cancer prevention plans that can maximize your health and minimize your risks. Nothing is left out. We’ve even included more than 50 recipes packed with the nutrients known to put your body in cancer-fighting trim.

Say you’re concerned about lung cancer. Flip through the alphabetically-ordered chapters in part 1 until you come to Lung Cancer. Then sit down and read. What causes lung cancer? Who usually gets it? Who doesn’t? Take the quiz “Are you at Risk for Lung Cancer?” and find out whether or not you are. Do you smoke? Do you work with asbestos or radio-active materials? Do you usually leave green, yellow, or orange fruits and vegetables to hamsters?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you may be at increased risk for lung cancer. So We’ll suggest you flip to these entries in part 2 of the book: Early Detection, Fruit, Heredity, Indoor Polllution, Marijuana, Outdoor Pollution, Prescription Drugs, Tobacco, Vegetables, Vitamin A, Vitamin

C, and Vitamin E. Each one will tell you how to make changes in your life that will minimize your risk of cancer.

Vitamin A, for example, is a substance that one researcher describes as a kind of cellular “shock absorber” in the way it protects your body. Does it actually prevent lung cancer? How? Should you get it from supplements? From diet? How much is enough? How much is too much?

The Complete Book of Cancer Prevention will tell you. And it won’t leave you wondering how to work preventionn into your life. Since a key finding by the cancer researchers consulted for this book is that 30 percent of all cancer deaths can be prevented by diet—and many of the researchers and cancer specialists we interviewed have changed their diet to reflect this—we’ve included recipes loaded with nutrients like vitamin A in part 3, Cancer-Fighting Recipes. Use them as a part of your overall cancer prevention plan.

Nor have we forgotten those of our who have already had one bout with cancer. Congratulations on yur win. Part 4, Preventing a Recurrence, is for you. You’ll get the latest information on chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, mind/body healing, radiation therapy and surgical treatment. What are they? What do they do? What will you feel? How can you maximize treatment effects and minimize side effects?

Use the information to understand your doctor’s advice and put your options into perspective. Then fight. And, remember, we’re fighting, too.
