Horace Greeley

The Book that Changed America

Chapter 20

Charles Loring Brace was friend's with Horace Greely and would ask him to employ boys from the children's aid society.

Charles Loring Brace almost certainly read this epistolary exchange, which was reprinted in Greeley's New York newspaper and which added to the debate between special creation and developmentalism that had raged since the publication of the Origin of Species. Brace was a friend of Greeley's, and occasionally he wrote the editor to ask for help finding employment for his orphans. He still recalled the New Year's dinner party at Franklin Sanborn's when Thoreau had evinced such interest in Darwin's new book.
