Actions: Stability
Criterium 1: Consistent and stable properties over time; No break in issues
Measures:
Need to develop procedures and tests to:
• Understand the mechanisms behind time-based degradation
• Understand the mechanisms behind the break-in period reactions
• Develop test methods to predict ageing
• Test methods must include the impact of the products of rolling e.g., MgO impact on pH stability.
• Test methods must accurately mirror rolling conditions in realistic time scales
• Develop method for Dynamic Surface Tension Measurement
Actions
Study and understand the root causes and influencing factors on current emulsion instability before designing the new concepts
- First study on NOA (in PPT adding Mg and later on bacteria) initiated – action ongoing in the :{COI China}:
Evaluate emulsions parameters after wear simulator tests – tests only low / no soap products? Wait for input of next brainstorm session concerning mill house cleanliness.
Map out typical emulsion systems to understand current field emulsion depletion and build up mechanisms:
• Emulsion filtration systems
• Surface oil skimming systems
• Possible evaporation rates of different chemistries
• Note: A type of mass balance perhaps
- Most probably we will go for a low / no soap based product – evaluate analytically low soap based field emulsions (NOA China) – action COI China. Be aware that ingredients present in NOA will most probably be different from those present in the new technology.
- Parallel action: Investigate new approach from first principles with current knowledge of emulsions in use and their disadvantages.
Take along in the test protocol in the project
- Identify chemical classes not exhibiting the identified weaknesses e.g., end-capped emulsifiers, EOPO emulsifiers, non-mineral oil based systems.
- Listing of end-capped emulsifiers and EO/PO emulsifiers present in QH and globally at different suppliers – :{Action can already be started by the COI USA}:
Fundamental ester characterization – conduct structure activity work to see if we can improve esters in use in Non-ferrous products
Take along in project – use new developed MTM RBMT.
Look at Phosphate esters Philip has found work well in the Windsor studies
- Summarize work of Philip. Action COI USA
Develop pragmatic approach to surfactants selection.
• Define operating conditions (pH, hardness values, etc.).
• Define first demands (good wetting, good lubrication, etc.)
• Investigate surfactant groups against defined criteria such as dynamic surface tension measurements, hard water conditions, etc.
• Steer away from new fundamental development.
• Review BASF development of 10 years ago - 1300 BL – instead of esters.
• Develop some basic understanding how EP additives behave in current formulations.
Take along in the project. Note that 1300 BL is considered to be too costly (>2.5 €/kg)
- Study interfacial tension mechanisms to reduce particle size (Start with Nico Verhaar work as reference).
Take along in the project
- Ensure global availability of new chemicals can be achieved.
Take along in the project
- Include registration of new chemicals in project time-line.
