Monitoring and Alerts Setup

In today's digital landscape, maintaining optimal performance and availability of your infrastructure is crucial. Monitoring tools and alert systems play a vital role in ensuring that any potential issues are identified and addressed promptly. This guide will walk you through setting up monitoring and alerts using New Relic and Azure CLI, focusing on IIS servers and SQL databases.

Step 1: Integrate New Relic

To achieve real-time performance monitoring of your IIS servers and SQL databases, integrating New Relic is an essential step. New Relic provides comprehensive insights into your infrastructure's performance, helping you to identify bottlenecks and optimize resource usage.

To begin the integration, you need to install the New Relic Infrastructure agent on your servers. This agent collects data about your system's performance and sends it to New Relic for analysis. Use the following command to install the agent:

msiexec /i http://download.newrelic.com/infrastructure_agent.msi /qn

This command utilizes the Windows Installer (msiexec) to download and install the New Relic Infrastructure agent silently (/qn flag for quiet mode), ensuring minimal disruption to your server operations. Once installed, the agent will start collecting data, providing you with valuable insights into your server's performance metrics.

Step 2: Configure Alerts with Azure CLI

After setting up monitoring, the next step is to configure alerts that notify you of any potential issues, such as resource usage exceeding predefined thresholds. Azure CLI is a powerful tool that allows you to manage Azure resources directly from the command line, making it ideal for setting up alerts.

To create an alert for high CPU usage, use the following Azure CLI command:

az monitor metrics alert create --name "HighCPUAlert" --resource-group DevOpsExpert-Dev1 \
  --scopes "/subscriptions/YOUR_SUB_ID/resourceGroups/DevOpsExpert-Dev1/providers/Microsoft.Compute/virtualMachines/IIS-Server" \
--condition "avg Percentage CPU > 80"

This command sets up an alert named "HighCPUAlert" within the specified resource group (DevOpsExpert-Dev1). The --scopes parameter defines the specific resource to monitor, in this case, a virtual machine running an IIS server. The --condition parameter specifies the alert condition: it will trigger when the average CPU usage exceeds 80%.

By configuring such alerts, you ensure that you are promptly informed of any performance issues, allowing you to take corrective actions before they impact your users. This proactive approach helps maintain the reliability and efficiency of your infrastructure.
