Module 11 Learning Activity

Let us quickly recap this module. Let’s agree that activism is important. The challenge is, what do we mean by activism?

It can mean everything from writing letters to committing civil disobedience and vandalism or even property destruction. It is a huge range. To say that we need to do everything we can is just not necessarily helpful to individuals. As I mentioned earlier on, there are millions of individuals who want to be more effective in tackling climate breakdown who have no idea what they can actually do. I think this has been a real failure of the climate change groups and the climate change movement, this idea that, yeah, let's all do stuff.

But what exactly should I be doing on a day-to-day basis? I'll provide in the closing section of the course some recommendations on what you can do on a day-to-day basis. In general, we really should be doing much better in helping people figure out how to be effective activists.

That's the topic of the climate chess bonus coming up after the closing module. I really encourage you to stick around and come back for that. As with all the other modules, uh, there will be links to organizations and more in the learning activity, and in the Ebook we cover some of the topics in more depth, including some of the things from Andrea Malm's book, “How to Blow Up a Pipeline.” (And again, it's not about how to blow up a pipeline -- I just want to make that very clear!)

We've covered a lot of ground in the several hours that we've had together in the course. I will wrap it up very briefly in the next module and then there are three bonuses that I think you'll find very interesting.

Additional Materials

As discussed in the videos, the topic of activism is a tricky one. To explore some of the different conversations underway in this space:
