1.4 Introducing the Climate Web

I've been interested in the topic of knowledge management for a long time, and I started building the Climate Web as a knowledge management system for climate change and for business decision support around climate change more than 10 years ago. And in this video, I'll give you a quick introduction to what it is and how you can take advantage of it.

For starters, there is no shortage of materials when it comes to discussions of the future of climate change.

There's also no shortage of materials when it comes to explaining why climate change has been such a difficult problem to get under control.

And there's no shortage of materials around how to solve the problem of climate change.

In fact, if we could all individually know what we collectively know about climate change, we would be making a lot more progress on solving the problem.

When it comes to climate change and business climate risks, there are hundreds of relevant books, thousands of reports, thousands of journal articles, tens of thousands of relevant news stories, not to mention videos and websites.

This course leverages a lot of those materials through the Climate web, which is an open access knowledge base that you can take advantage of. All of the graphics and materials used in this course include citations that you can track back and access in the Climate Web, if that's useful to you.

The Climate Web represents more than 25,000 hours of knowledge curation, and it has tens of thousands of PDFs, news and opinion stories, websites, videos, extracted graphics and ideas, and more. A huge amount of information to be sure, and it's also organized by thousands of topical headings, thousands of index entries, more than a thousand topical dashboards, and more.

and you can leverage the climate web for business decision making in all kinds of ways.

I'll show you later in the course how to do it with scenario planning for pre-mortems, for assumption audits. And if you want to think about positioning your company for deep uncertainty, these are all things you can do with content in the climate Web.

One Fortune 100 user was kind enough to characterize the climate web as being like having a hundred leading experts in climate science, risk risk management, and corporate strategy collaborating with you at the decision making table.

The Climate Web is built with the brain software, which you can take a look at. You can visit the Climate Webs website. You can also jump directly into the Climate Web as an open access resource. And in this course we've included quite a few climate web topical

Screenshots to help you dig deeper into topics that might be of particular interest to you as opposed to just showing you the video with a relatively high level understanding of a topic. You can dig a lot more deeply into the topics if you want to, and in the following slides, I'll show you how to do that and what you're likely to see.

In the next video, I'll talk about how to get the most out of this course, including with use of the climate web, after which we'll jump into the meat of the course.
