Meds Just For Stabilizing?

The next time I see my therapist I intend to discuss the option of medication. I am really torn on the topic of meds, though.

On one hand I understand that if what I am experiencing is not psychosis or a severe mood disorder but is instead trauma-based, then the only way I can get better is by putting in the long, hard work in therapy. Therapy is a slow, gradual process that can't be rushed, and I can respect that reality.

However, on the other hand, even if what I am experiencing is not psychosis, it still feels like psychosis to me much of the time. And at 45 minutes per week, I will be spending less than 4 hours a month in therapy.

Then the central crux of the issue is the concern that meds will somehow interfere with the therapeutic process for trauma-related issues. So I almost see it as having to decide on a trade of sorts.. stabilize with meds but possibly become hooked on them, experience any side effects, spending the extra money, drastically slow down therapy (which is already extremely slow), or.. not try any meds but risk a total mental breakdown before I can actually get anywhere in therapy.

(Continue...)

Did anyone else go through a rather rough time when they first started treatment for this stuff? I know there are lots of threads on meds (many of which I have read), but I want something that is like.. a temporary stabilizer for anxiety and chaotic, intrusive thoughts/voices/images. I used to know many people who used Xanax, but it seemed to be addictive (based on their behavior, they treated it like a street drug and popped it like candy) which freaked me out a bit. I don't want to be a junky. Something as strong as an atypical-anti-psychotic apparently made me "switch" and I lost at least a month of time, if not more. Wondering what I should dodge or aim for if my therapist is open to the idea of meds..
