Paranoia / Trust Issues

Anyone else struggle with intense paranoia about other people? When I take a close, critical look at my personal history, I find that there have been very few times in my life when I was actually able to trust someone else.

Typically when I have been able to trust someone else, it seems that it had a lot to do with my perception that they were all-around inferior to me and I was caring for them in some way. It wasn't really a genuine form of trust, but rather I considered them a non-threat and I cared about them, which was apparently enough to fend of paranoid thoughts and feelings.

I don't seem to be capable of being vulnerable in any way to anyone and giving them an ounce of trust. I can occasionally fake trust, and make it seem like I trust a person, but under the surface I am constantly analyzing them, keeping record of every little detail and in some cases even setting deliberate 'traps' to see if I can 'catch them' lying to me, changing their stories or trying to manipulate me, without them being aware that I am aware.

It's easy for me to drive myself a bit nuts with this stuff. I have had very few friendships, and even fewer that have lasted too long. The only long-standing (almost 7 years now) friendship I've had is with a fellow gamer who lives in another country. Our friendship is entirely online, and I also tend to have the 'upper hand' emotionally, in that I give him lots of advice, consoling, etc but never let that table turn. (Maybe I am just a total control freak lol.)

It is so easy to set off this paranoid mechanism in my mind. It happens so often, and I'm so used to not reacting to it, that I tried to explain to my current T numerous times already that I am a very paranoid person, just as like a fair heads-up to her. I am still struggling with it constantly, though.

Great exercise practice, I'll do it myself for some situations. I've also thought that in a situation like the cashier guy, I would've thought: * ...
