Linking Thoughts Between Brains
Linking Thoughts Between Brains

Q. Is it possible to link a Thought in one Brain to a Thought in another Brain? Or link one Brain to another Brain? What are the rules/limits to linking?
A. There are no "limits" of which I'm aware:
- You can use links for any thought within another brain, not just the home thought.
- You can either drop in a local link or a web link from a thought in one brain into another different brain as an attachment:
- The local URL of a thought in another brain will open the other thought (in the other brain) within your desktop application (This thought opens in a new brain tab.)
- The web URL to a thought in another brain will (obviously) open in your browser.
- You can also copy a thought itself from one brain and drop it either into the plex or the note of another brain.
More details are provided below.
In addition, here's a simple demo (see child thought in adjacent plex) which illustrates local and web links that both connect into another, different demo brain.
How to Link Thoughts Between Brains
Thoughts from other brains can be added into an existing brain in a variety of different ways, so you can dive in and begin testing this without worrying about "breaking" anything:
Option #1: Simply copy the local or web link of the desired thought in one brain ~ or copy the thought itself. Then you can create an entirely new thought with this link in the second brain by right-clicking on the plex, and then selecting either of the following 2 options:
- "Paste Web Link" (for either web or local links) or
- Paste the (named) thought itself.
Option #2: You can add the copied link as an attachment to an existing thought in the second brain:
- Select "Add Attachment"
- Select "Paste as Web Link" regardless if the link you've selected is local or web (This option works for both types of links.)
Option #3: You can add a link or a thought into the body of a note in the second brain in one of 3 different ways:
- Simply paste the local link directly into the note.
- Type the text you want to use for the link name > Highlight this text > Select the "Link" icon on the note editor menu bar, paste the copied link into the text entry box and then select "Insert URL".
- Copy the thought itself you want to jump to, and then paste this thought into the note. The link that is immediately created will automatically jump to the named thought:
- locally. if you working in the desktop
- in the browser, if you are working online
Note:
- Local links in a note to another (different) brain will say "Destination Thought Not Found", but the link to an external (local) brain WILL work.
- A thought copied and pasted into a note in another, different brain will (currently) open in the same window in the web client. < We will eventually need to submit a feature request to open such thought links into a new window.
