RUBIANE MAIA

PRIMARY FUNCTION

CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC CULMINATION — BODY–EARTH → MORE-THAN-HUMAN CO-CREATION

Rubiane Maia is not simply a contemporary ecological performance artist. Her importance lies in moving from body–earth relation toward interdependence among human and more-than-human beings. Relevant contexts include O Jardim / The Garden at Terra Comunal and especially Coming from the Plants, MAI / In Dialogue with Joseph Beuys.

DIALOGUE WITH BEUYS

The explicit artistic dialogue is:

Beuys → energy as transformative force → economy of heat → Rubiane Maia → energetic exchange between humans and more-than-humans.

Maia does not simply continue Beuys. She reconsiders universal energy through decolonial thinking, African diaspora, trans-generational memory, forced migration, plants, territory, and care.

UNIVERSAL ENERGY → SITUATED RELATIONALITY.

LIVING ARCHIVES AND MATERIAL AGENCY

Body, memory, territory, hair, soil, plants, organic matter, and objects / traces associated with displacement form a field in which trauma and memory may manifest beyond individual consciousness. This is an artistic and epistemic proposition, not a literal metaphysical claim.

Body as archive → territory as archive → body + territory as living archives.

Material can become witness, but not through simplistic anthropomorphism. It can also become participant and co-creator.

Nature as resource → nature as material → nature as partner → nature as co-creator.

MORE-THAN-HUMAN / DISTRIBUTED AGENCY

More-than-human is not a fashionable label. It destabilises the equation human subject = primary agent / environment = passive context. Plants, minerals, soil, weather, organic processes, and time can participate in shaping the artistic event.

More-than-human → distributed agency → co-creation.

CARE AND RITUAL

Care is not kindness, healing, or wellness. It is an alternative relational structure to control, extraction, domination, and mastery.

Mastery ↔ care.

Extraction ↔ reciprocity.

Care changes how something is perceived, approached, touched, listened to, and allowed to act. Ritualized performance becomes attention to materials, suppressed histories, plants, bodies, and territories.

Slow gesture, plant rhythm, listening, repetition, material transformation, grief, and vitality shift:

Performer as actor → performer as listener / participant / caretaker.

RELATIONS

Mendieta → body–earth continuity → Maia → body–earth–plant–mineral interdependence is a conceptual genealogy, not an asserted direct influence. Starhawk and Maia both involve interdependence, care, ritual, and earth relation, but Starhawk primarily uses collective spiritual-political technology while Maia makes ritualized attention a material and historical practice.

Performance is not about ecology; it becomes an ecology of relations.

Removal audit: without Maia, the Brain loses the key shift from body–earth relation to distributed more-than-human co-creation and care.
