FIXED MATERIAL / FREEDOM INSIDE THE FRAME

The workshop combined fixed choreography with freedom.

Examples include:

• creating individual solos inside the heartbeat template;
• breaking a phrase into numbered sections;
• inventing new material when numbers 7 or 8 are called;
• deforming copied movements;
• changing partners;
• inserting character into dance;
• allowing improvisation inside a fixed show structure.

The framework is not the opposite of freedom.

It creates a field in which decisions can occur.
