GEORGES BATAILLE
RELATIONSHIP MAP — GEORGES BATAILLE
Endurance, risk and ritual
The strong conceptual link to [[thought:e7ed05cb-604b-46a4-b827-ab3c48ca2f98|ENDURANCE, RISK, RITUAL & THE EXTREME BODY]] concerns Bataille's theory of expenditure. Energy need not always be preserved, accumulated, utilised or made productive; duration, excess, ritual and physical expenditure can deliberately spend energy without utilitarian return.
This link must retain the tension EXPENDITURE ↔ CARE. Bataille's account does not provide an ethical justification for self-harm. Exhaustion, pain and sacrifice must not be romanticised.
Trauma, pain and endurance
The link to [[thought:d8d7f6b0-ecdd-423d-bb08-2c83a50221bc|TRAUMA STUDIES, NEUROBIOLOGY & THE SOMATIC TURN]] is a philosophical counterpoint, not scientific evidence. Modern pain science asks how the body interprets and modulates pain. Bataille asks why human cultures might deliberately seek excess, limit or non-utility. These are distinct epistemic registers.
Tinguely and productivity
The link to [[thought:c73e577b-ab95-4ad0-b6f0-2ea2f918f12e|JEAN TINGUELY]] is a particularly useful conceptual resonance. Taylor's industrial logic moves from energy to efficiency and output; Tinguely materialises a counter-logic of machine, expenditure, useless movement and destruction. Bataille formulates philosophically the problem Tinguely materialises: what happens when energy is spent without productive return? This deepens the existing productivity/uselessness dimension without creating a new concept node.
Joseph Beuys
The qualified link to [[thought:40f5cb71-9d2e-4d4c-bbe5-e54976ef845e|Joseph Beuys]] is a productive contrast, not a claim of influence. Beuys frames energy as transformation, circulation and social potential; Bataille frames energy as excess, expenditure and loss. ENERGY AS TRANSFORMATION ↔ ENERGY AS EXPENDITURE. The tension remains unresolved and useful for my own practice.
Voodoo Child
The link to [[thought:72ec4401-84a2-45b8-b6c6-1b3eaff73e3d|SOLO : VOODOO CHILD]] is a conceptual / analytical reference unless Bataille is documented as an explicit intellectual source. Voice, breath, exhaustion, loss of control, excess, the Eye and dissolution can be read through the critique of utility. The Solo uses expenditure as an artistic condition for destabilising ordinary control, not as proof that suffering produces authentic knowledge. EXHAUSTION ≠ TRUTH.
