SUBLIMATION BY FAILURE

Sublimation by failure

Theory used by Clarisse: Fabrice Bourlez enables a reading of Pasolini against a clean Freudian model of sublimation. Pasolini does not simply transcend the sexual into the spiritual. His cinema keeps perversion, failure, incompletion, desire, and transgression active inside the image.

Failure is therefore not the absence of artistic success. It prevents the work from closing itself into purified meaning. The image remains erotically, politically, and materially unfinished. In Edipo Re, autobiographical embodiment puts psychoanalytic structure into crisis rather than illustrating it.

Thesis argument: the artwork's force lies partly in its refusal to resolve the conflict between sexual desire, spiritual aspiration, family history, and representation.

Retrospective CPPM resonance: failure can be treated as a productive anti-closure in research on corporeality and performance. This is not claimed by the thesis as CPPM.
