JONATHAN CRARY
THE OBSERVER IS HISTORICALLY PRODUCED
Crary's Techniques of the Observer ruptures the idea of vision as a timeless biological faculty.
Panofsky → organization of represented space.
Crary → historical organization of the observer.
Camera obscura model → stable subject / object distance. Nineteenth-century optical devices and physiological vision—stereoscope, afterimage, binocular vision, temporality of perception, attention—make the observer embodied, unstable, and historically produced.
Vision is not simply eye → world. It depends on body, technology, attention, temporality, and cultural training.

[[thought:3d8eeb9f-0bea-4504-a490-4b767279ae52|THE EMBODIED OBSERVER / APPARATUS]]
An apparatus conditions seeing without mechanically determining perception. This prepares relations to Krauss, Pirelli, and Farocki.
Removal audit: without Crary, the Brain loses the historical account of the observer as an embodied and technologically conditioned position.
