PUBLIC LECTURE — EMBODIMENT, DEAFNESS & PROSTHESIS

EMBODIMENT WITHOUT NECESSARY ENHANCEMENT

Marco discussed forms of embodiment that need not be technologically empowered, augmented, optimised or corrected. The lecture foregrounded vulnerability, acceptance, relation, difference and resistance to fixed identity systems.

PROSTHESIS CONSTRUCTS THE BODY

The lecture cites the idea that a prosthesis does more than perform a function; it also constructs bodily possibilities, social meaning, identity and relations with others.

DEAFNESS

Marco discussed his experience as a late-deafened person and work with a diverse group of deaf participants. The lecture distinguished medicalised ideas of hearing loss, Deaf cultural identity, sign language, cochlear implants, hearing technologies and different relations to sound. Do not generalise one position to the entire Deaf community.

COCHLEAR IMPLANTS / NORMALISATION

The lecture questioned technologies that attempt to normalise hearing according to an imagined hearing standard. Marco emphasised that hearing is already diverse.

PROSTHESIS FOR SHARING

Marco described prosthetic devices developed not to enhance one individual body but to transmit sound between bodies, allowing bodily sound to travel through contact, one person to feel another’s heartbeat and audience members to pass the device. Physiological sound could circulate collectively.

RECONFIGURATION OF SENSES

The performance created a shared sensory reconfiguration. The prosthesis functioned as an organ for sharing.

MORPHOLOGY / ENGINEERING / TRAINING

The creation process included imagining morphology, designing shape, considering movement, 3D printing, engineering, wiring, programming and extensive bodily training.

CABLE AS CREATIVE CONSTRAINT

Cables could be more reliable than wireless transmission, physically restrictive, visually present, incorporated into the aesthetic and part of the dramaturgy.

MACHINE DIFFERENCE

Marco resisted anthropomorphising machines. A machine may function as a limited stage partner because it moves, responds, occupies space and changes the performer; this does not mean it possesses human intention or creativity.

INCORPORATION / SUBTRACTION

An object may become part of bodily possibilities through enabling and limiting effects. Later work was described as moving away from enhancement toward subtraction and limitation.
