DECONDITIONING / VOICE / LANGUAGE
DECONDITIONING OLD HABITS
Presence is explored through embodiment practices to liberate performers from habitual acting patterns. Grounding techniques address social and cultural conditioning.
Aims: release social / cultural conditioning; free habitual patterns; activate senses; generate exhilarating presence; establish synergy among body, mind, emotion and instinct; create authentic performance rooted in the present moment.
Conditioning includes performance habits, tricks, social habits, cultural habits, vocal habits and physical patterns. Method: notice; observe; develop distance through an inner observer; create another choice; let go when useful.
VOICE & LANGUAGE
Voice and language are extensions of embodied presence. Vocal work seeks one's true voice by stripping away socially conditioned vocal habits, aiming for grounded and resonant sound.
Participants investigate textures, rhythms, shapes, nuance and subtext. Through tasting, language is allowed to come alive in performance.
INSIDE / OUTSIDE
The work moves both ways:
- inside → outside: sensation / feeling / impulse creates movement, body and text;
- outside → inside: movement, boxing, breath, imposed physical action and being observed create inner sensation, alertness, feeling and presence.
OBSERVER WITHIN
When performers notice resistance, habits, recurring reactions and habitual approaches, they can develop an observer within. This can support personal life, professional development and performance. They may “zoom out” and observe dynamics within the body, creating space to choose another way.
