CRAIG — INTEROCEPTION AND THE FELT BODY
A.D. “Bud” Craig gives the somatic turn a foundational interoceptive framework. Exteroception concerns the external world; interoception concerns internal bodily condition: temperature, pain, itch, muscle ache, visceral state, breathing, cardiovascular state, and homeostatic needs.
Insular networks participate in integrating bodily, affective, and contextual information relevant to pain and bodily awareness. Avoid saying that pain simply “happens in the insula.” A broad posterior → mid / anterior insular integration is a useful model, not a single-site explanation.
Craig → interoception → pain as homeostatic / bodily experience → somatic turn.
The body is not merely an object we possess. It is continuously felt from within.
Body state → subjective feeling.
Removal audit: without Craig, the Brain loses the neuroanatomical and theoretical hinge between bodily condition, subjective feeling, and pain.
