DAY 5 — CONFUSING MATERIAL
PROTOCOL — DAY 5: CONFUSING MATERIAL
PHASE: COOPERATION
SOURCE CLARIFICATION
The initial six-day work plan names Day 5:
“CONFUSING MATERIAL.”
The later protocol notes do not repeat this heading explicitly, but they document the transition into the Cooperation phase and the framing of the material for the Open Class.
MOVEMENT OF THE PROCESS
Henry described the group as having reached its deepest point and now beginning to come back upward.
The task was to frame the work developed with the partner.
FRAMING THE INVESTIGATION
Each pair was asked to find a question for its improvisational material.
Henry offered questions such as:
- How can we release the monster and find tenderness?
- How do we let go of the patterns?
- How do we integrate ourselves?
- How do we tune together?
- How do we enter?
The question was not simply a title.
It functioned as a frame for continuing the investigation.
CHALK AND QUESTIONS ON THE FLOOR
Pairs divided the space with chalk.
Questions were placed on the floor.
The spatial organisation became part of the research and of the way the pair entered its material.
PREPARATION OF THE OPEN CLASS
The emerging Open Class structure began with:
- collective flow;
- movement through the space;
- small “sparkles” of individual material;
- performers inspiring one another;
- echoes of movement.
Pairs and groups entered the flow in a planned order.
The group then discussed the sequence and repeated the complete structure.
