MATERIAL AS ACTIVE FORCE
MATERIAL AS ACTIVE FORCE
Analytical term used in this Brain—not a phrase falsely attributed to Joseph Beuys. This lens asks what materials physically do, rather than treating them as symbols supplied with fixed meanings.
FROM SYMBOL TO CAPACITY
Beuys's materials are not exhausted by “felt symbolises warmth,” “fat symbolises healing” or “honey symbolises life.” Felt insulates, retains warmth, absorbs sound, separates, protects and muffles. Fat softens, hardens, melts, changes with temperature, can be moulded and can lose form. Copper conducts. Honey flows, sticks, preserves and is produced through collective non-human activity. Iron and metal conduct, resist, cool and carry weight. Organic materials age, decay, ferment and change.
These behaviours participate in making the work. Material does not only represent transformation; material performs transformation. The artist acts on material, but material properties act back: artist ↔ material process. This does not mean Beuys believed matter possessed agency in exactly the contemporary new-materialist sense. It means his practice destabilises the model in which the artist has all agency and passive matter merely receives form.
ENERGY, WARMTH AND TRANSMISSION
Beuys's conceptions of energy, warmth, transmission and transformation connect physical properties with an artistic model of change. Some Fond works were conceived as battery-like structures—receiving, storing and transmitting energy. Felt could function as insulation; copper could function through conductivity. This is not a claim that the sculptures literally operated as scientifically functional electrical batteries. It is material property + artistic energy model.
The economy of heat / warmth extends from temperature toward creativity, social transformation and human relation. The distinction must remain clear: insulation, conductivity, melting and flow are physical properties; warmth as creativity, transmission or social transformation is a metaphorical / social extension grounded in an encounter with those properties.
VOODOO CHILD: METHOD, NOT DECORATION
The strongest connection to [[thought:72ec4401-84a2-45b8-b6c6-1b3eaff73e3d|SOLO : VOODOO CHILD]] is methodological and historically grounded in the Solo's explicit acknowledgement of Beuys as an influence. The work is conceived through ritual performance, animist philosophies, sound, gesture, matter, transformation and a humanity in denial of its own nature. Its public description treats sound, gesture and matter as tools for accessing what is repressed, fractured or in transit.
The relevant question is not “does Clarisse use materials symbolically like Beuys?” It is: what does each material actually do inside the Solo? Does it mark, resist, absorb, flow, erode, contain, stain, reflect, mute, resonate, transform the body, transform the space or change over time? The available Solo thought currently contains no note documenting its actual materials and actions, so no unverified material inventory or physical property is added here. The methodological proposition remains: material is not scenography added to action; material participates in producing action.
Animism must be handled critically. Do not equate Beuys = animism = Voodoo Child. Distinguish Beuys's self-styled shamanic / Eurasian mythology from contemporary animist, more-than-human, decolonial and relational approaches. The useful inheritance is not imitation of a shaman persona, but asking how material, body, animal, sound and object enter relations beyond pure human rational control. If an animal figure is documented in the Solo, the secondary question is whether the animal functions as an alterity against which the human subject is redefined—not merely as representation.
RUBIANE MAIA: UNIVERSAL ENERGY → SITUATED RELATIONALITY
The connection to [[thought:045adbdd-fa72-4669-8057-5ce29a77c132|RUBIANE MAIA — MORE-THAN-HUMAN CO-CREATION]] is strong and explicitly situated in Coming from the Plants (2025), MAI in dialogue with Beuys. Maia researches Beuys's economy of heat, energy, diagrams and transformation, then shifts the field toward human ↔ more-than-human exchange among plants, soil, body, memory, territory and diaspora.
Beuys: energy as universal transformative principle. Maia: energy as situated relation. Her questions include decoloniality, African diaspora, forced migration, transgenerational memory and territory. She does not simply continue Beuys; she critically re-situates him. Material as active force → material / plant / territory as relational participant. Nature moves from resource, to material, to partner, to co-creator, without requiring simplistic anthropomorphism or a literal metaphysical claim.
BEUYS, ARCHIVE AND TRANSMISSION
Abramović's 2005 Seven Easy Pieces re-performance of Beuys's How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare documents a historical relation of transmission, not a simple line of influence. The sequence becomes action → trace → archive → re-performance → research → new performance. MAI's 2025 Marina Abramović & MAI in Dialogue with Joseph Beuys makes the archive active through residency, collection, site-specific research and long-duration performance. This produces new work rather than preserving a sealed historical relic. CRITICAL COUNTERWEIGHT
Beuys's role during National Socialism, postwar self-mythology, use of shamanic / Indigenous references and universalist claims require critical examination. The Tatar rescue story is a self-mythologising narrative, not verified biography. Contemporary practices need not inherit this myth in order to inherit the question of matter, relation and transformation. Maia's decolonial re-situation is a crucial corrective.
Matter + sound + gesture + body + ritual become a transformative field when materials are allowed to resist, alter, transmit and reorganise action rather than merely illustrate an idea.
