YOKO ONO

Yoko Ono

Cut Piece

The work is not simply “a passive woman has her clothes cut off.” Its structure is: performer sits/remains → audience approaches → scissors as instrument → clothing as boundary → cutting as choice → time as escalation/hesitation → audience as individual ethical agents.

The spectator no longer merely looks; the spectator does. Observation → participation → responsibility.

Tension

Voluntary vulnerability ↔ audience power. Ono structures the conditions, yet participants retain agency. The work produces a field where power, trust, aggression, care, hesitation and social norms become visible through action.

Political performance

Through anti-war practice, a simple gesture can become public image, mass-media event and political message. This is micropolitical action: political performance may operate not by representing violence, but by reorganising relations between people.
