OTTO DIX
BODY AS HISTORICAL EVIDENCE
Otto Dix transforms the epistemology of the human body. Against the heroic military body and ideal form, Der Krieg presents the wounded, prosthetic, and mutilated body as historical evidence.
Genealogy
Heroic military body → industrial warfare → wounded / prosthetic / mutilated body → Neue Sachlichkeit → anti-heroic representation.
The key shift is:
BODY AS IDEAL FORM → BODY AS HISTORICAL EVIDENCE
Dix → wounded body → body as document → body as archive.
Later body art and corporeal performance can be connected carefully: the body becomes a medium of evidence and material testimony. This is a retrospective conceptual relation, not a direct line of influence.
Removal audit: without Dix, the Brain loses a visual articulation of the body as document rather than idealised representation.
