1700s The first link between damage and cancer occured in the 1700s between boys who were chimney sweeps and scrotal cancer
1775 In 1775, Pott found an association between exposure to soot and a high incidence of scrotal cancer (later found to be a type of squamous cell carcinoma) in chimney sweeps.
1775 It was that long ago-in 1775, to be exact-that the first cause of cancer was discovered. It was coal soot, which an English physician by the name of Percival Pott concluded was the cause of a particular form of cancer in chimney sweeps.
