DNA methylating enzymes
Dr. Catlin found that members of the bacterial genus, Neisseria-which 1s a leading cause of meningitis in humans -possess enzymes that attack foreign DNA but do not harm their own.

Francois Jacob was a French biologist who, together with Jacques Monod, originated the idea that control of enzyme levels in all cells occurs through regulation of transcription.

The mechanism of this discirimination, Dr. Catlin said, is still obscure, but modern theories of enzyme action hold that the specificity of these molecules is determined by the relationship between their shapes and that of the molecules they act on.
The presumption here is that the breaks are caused by stresses in cellular DNA within the chromosomes resulting from the abnormal methylation of it by enzymes which tumor viruses introduce into, cells.
They also found that methyl groups are attached to nucleic acids by the action of special protein molecules, called enzymes.
This finding, suggests that the enzymes would have to be able to tell the difference between their own DNA and alien DNA.
This means that each species has its own set of enzymes that methylate the bases in its nucleic acids in a distinctive way, as though there were some purpose to the process of methylation. But what purpose could methyl groups serve?
