According to his concept, bulky methyl groups on certain bases along the nucleic acid chain might cause kinks and bends in genetically determined places on DNA and RNA molecules.
Dr. Borek believes that they function at least in part to determine the three-dimensional, shape of nucleic acid molecules.
Dr. Borek's team has now shown, moreover, that none of the methylatable bases in one "breed" of RNA bears a methyl group, whereas a certain proportion of those bases...
Fourth, ultraviolet radiation, which, in excessive doses, causes cancer, has recently been found by Dr. Ryan to alter the normal levels of nucleic acid methylation in cells.
In fact, only a few years ago, Dr. B. Wesley Catlin of Marquette University found signs of a nucleic acid protective mechanism that could operate in iust that way.
It is now thought that the hereditary information and the directions for making cell proteins are encoded by the order in which those different bases appear on the long chain like nucleic acid molecules. This is the now famous genetic code of life.

Second, the largest amounts of methylated nucleic acid components ever reported have been found in tumor tissue. Whether unusually high levels of methylation, exist in other diseased tissues is not known but has not been seen yet.
Third, abnorntally methylated nucleic acid components have been found both in animal tissues which have been exposed to chemical carcinogens and in excretions from human patients with different forms of cancer.
