1954 Jonas Salk introduces his killed polio vaccine, made from virus grown in monkey kidneys.
1960 Sabin's polio vaccine won out. But Sabin's polio vaccine like Salk's was contaminated with SV40.

Albert Sabin vs. Hilary Koprowski (fight for control of polio vaccine after the Cutter incident derailed Salk's vaccine)
Due to the scandal of Hilary Koprowski experimenting on human beings shifted the prefernce to Jonas Salk's research.
He continued to conduct research and publish books in his later years, focusing in his last years on the search for a vaccine against HIV.
In later years Revelle continued to show some animosity toward Salk, once saying: "He is a folk hero, even though he is... not very bright."
Revelle's struggle to acquire land for the new campus put him in competition with Jonas Salk, and Revelle lost some of what he called the "best piece of land we had" on UCSD's eventual Torrey Pines site to the fledgling Salk Institute.
Salk also campaigned vigorously for mandatory vaccination throughout the rest of his life, calling the universal vaccination of children against disease a "moral commitment".
