PL - Intro Roberts’ Book TEST

Sprinkle Language

A foundational book in the current prevailing approach to sex addiction in the church is Ted Roberts’ famous “Pure Desire: How One Man’s Triumph Can Help Others Break Free From Sexual Temptation.” Interestingly, however, Roberts never actually gives his testimony! The “How” he got free is simply unaddressed! The entire book is just psychological theory. Theologized psychological theory

It is a ‘christianization’ of the secular work of Patric Carnes, the “father of modern sex addiction therapy.” Carnes in fact founded the institution that licenses sex addiction therapists (the International Institute for Trauma & Addiction Professionals or ‘IITAP’). Carnes developed this ‘trauma-informed’ approach, which Roberts converted into the ‘therapeutic church’ approach. Roberts studied directly under Carnes, and is licensed by the IITAP.

I do not neglect the theory aspect, but all that is in Part B. You

only need to read that if you doubt that God works the way He worked in my life. But This is not a testimony of how a theory worked in my life (“with God’s help”)—but rather a testimony of how the Holy Spirit led me to commonly overlooked Scriptures which explain the simple approach of walking in the Spirit and taking God’s way of escape every time I am tempted.

For just a moment, however, allow me to briefly nitpick on theory part. The idea of ‘breaking’ free from ‘temptation’ is totally wrong from the git-go.

First, attacking sexual bondage from the standpoint of trying to avoid temptation is the opposite of what the Bible teaches. While we are taught not to exacerbate temptation by mindlessly wandering into adult book stores or doing other stupid things that invite unnecessary temptation into our lives, we are also taught that temptation is common to man. Even Jesus Himself was tempted like as we throughout His life (Luke 4:13). We don’t want to escape temptation. We want to escape the SIN that temptation is PUSHING us toward.

And second, freedom is not about ‘breaking’ free of anything. Captives cannot fight their way out of prison, grow and transform their way out of prison, or get themselves out any other way. Someone has to SET captives free…that’s pretty much the reason Jesus STARTED this whole Christianity thing to begin with.
