Jim Zemlin jz@linus.com I met Paul Ivanov ... v brite neuro grad stud at Cal... Helen Wills, eye tracking. pi@berkeley.edu

Jim was at IBM. Paul Ivanov pirsquared.org

Now head of Linux Fnd.

He started by showing a super bowl ad from 10 yrs ago featuring LINUX.

LINUX runs the NYSE, Tokyo, London, Chicago Merc.

nuclear subs,  entire city of Munich;

FAA, French Parliament,

SuperComputers, 15k SCs with Linus made disco of Brazil oil.

AVATAR ... all of frame rendering.

Is OPEN good enuf??

Goal.. have a computer not just on the desktop but in EVERYTHING (refrig, cars, electric meters etc)

and all running Linux.

Also runs Kindle, Android.

End of the era of GATES. OWNS the Cuper Computer industry.

L. runs most mobile devices.

RED HAT stock vs MSFT.. red hat up by 50% past yr while msft flat.

Internet of people 1 Billion

heading twrd 2 billion.

Internet of connected devices ... is headed toward 1 trillion!!!!

cars, appliances, raodway devices ... all connec to internet. eg smart meters.

1 million customers, one meter read per month vs 1 meter read every 15 mins ... huge delta in data.

Big Databases, big servers ... alll L.

don't need permission from msft etc... or from anybody... just do it.

L is free, self forming community

msft has 4-5 difft kernels in mobile vs desktop vs server etc.

*

If free, how do u make money.

A: by selling services, by contracts

embedded stuff, servers, secutrity.

L saves $ ... huge advantage (no royalty).

cell phone lasts less than 1 yr cuz of obsolescence...

so u cannot monetize ur r and d.

allows mer models

saves $ by sharing develop costs.

We r redefining personal computing (ipad, iphone etc).

clouds.

L tried for yrs to compete with msft on the desktop... but is taking over

on smartphones.

all u need is a web browser with html... ebook reader, TV, car

all the growth in comput is in mobile clients.

wireless home appliances, cars; must have the penguin.

tivo, kindle, Plam Pre

under the OLD model a device maker like Acer or DELL wud pay msft a royalty for their software and then

wud sell to customers for a tiny margin.

New model: FREE subsidized hardware (eg apple iphone paid by att subscription)... make it up on services.

eg Kindle at $139... no profit .. make money on books.

Kindle huge margin pressure... why IBM sold PC biz to Lenovo.

now also make money on APP Store eg.

Nokia does it with MeeGo.

will be in fridge, tv.

reason 4... the move to services ... eg App store.

software is free hdwr is free.

T mobile ... free phone... just pay subsrip.

ASP is now called cloud servers ... put apps in the cloud.

like salesforce.com

Google, Andr, Facebook, Amazon all use L.

L is de facto os of all service providing applics.

L. new econom effect; it is the internet of THINGS.

Challenge: coopeation (among L developers... or lack thereof)

any new kernel cud be called L.

but eventually developers always want to be part of commun.... to expand their reach.

always happens... as with IBM, Intel , NEC

Japan Inc begged us to hep.

hdwr drivers, kernel

Challenge 2: legal underst of ope source...

L. legal defense fund.

OpenInventionNetwork..

Chlg 3... fit and finish...

he asks audience... how many have L on their dekstops... only 3-5 say yes of perhaps 100... bad.

If u need to drop into cmd line to tweak it it kills it for users.

neilcurtis.com on Steve Jobs ... awesome, great.

Richard Stallman ... Freedom... alum foil on badge to prevent rfid tag.

New products need to be free and fabulous.

set top boxes, TVs, cars, handsets...

MeeGo has 1000 engineers full time to do above.

Q: isn't the action in the middleware (os is a commodity... private guys make the APPs)
