how RETINA translates visual scene into electrical impulses in optic nerve.

initiated by molecules => process and compress visual info into
a sequence of spikes in a population of neurons.
How does this work in terms of cell mechs.

it IS tractable cuz of accessibility and know. of cell types and function.

our goal: explain adaptation to contrast and image statistics and the
deteciton of moving objects.

use ISOLATED retina: project scenes from video monitor:
use extracell multielectrode arry to record from small patch of retina.
we simult record intracell. from retinal interneurons
and use 2 photon laser-scanning imagin to record physio responses

we use our data to crate math models to predict retinal ouput.
