German physicist;
directs Max Planck Inst in Heidelberg.
implemented 2 photon micro while a post-doc at MIT

image live cells deep in highly scattering tissures.

2nd invention: Serial block-face scanning EM
won Leibniz prize in 03 and Kavli in 2012.

good article at HHMI:

Janelia is in Virginia;

before him, biologists used confocal scope

key idea: dye molec absorbs 2 photons at same time.

probab of near simult hit by 2 phtons is low except near beam focus.
so, little or no excitation outside the focus.... no scattered light.

Note: early collab with post doc Rafa Yuste who was at David Tank's lab ...
imaged dendritic spines... measured how they accum calcium...

as a teen he took apart radios... natl extension of what I was doing with electronics as a kid.
