I purchased Dragon Naturally speaking version 10  (standard) on Dec 9 2008 at Fry's for $60 =
(100 retail - 40 instant rebate).
 
I registered with NUANCE yesterday  (see pswd).
 
(  Hx of DNS  is in wiki.... it began in <b>1982</b> with work by Jim Baker and <b>Janet Baker</b>... I believe I met
them at a conference in the early 80's.  J<b>anet is credited with being head of Hearsay</b>.
<b>Jim is credited with developing Hidden Markov Models</b>.  see wiki on HMM's and on Speech Recog (SR).
 
INSTALLATION PROBLEM....  program does not install .... it will tell u that it requires a reboot
to install a download (which it really does not).  Solution is on Nuance's website> Support>Knowledge Base>

I fixed this using their suggestions.  1)  I turned off Windows Update  (using Control Panel> Security Center
2)  I tempor. disabled startup applications... go run/msconfig  then
general tab  then  remove check from "load startup items"..
 
One or both of these two fixes worked!  (do both, they're easy).
 
INSTALLATION... just use the "Quic Start Guide"  that came with it  (see paper file with CD).

TIPS and DIRECTIONS
if a word is misrecognized, u can say  SPELL THAT and then spell the word.
 
u can say  SELECT 3 (to select third choce then edit using kybd or spell dialog box.
Press (-) key to open Correction menu...  that's like saying CORREC THAT.
 
then can press Right Arrow key to select next word or phrase to correct.
DNS can automat add periods and commas as u dictate.  To turn it on, click
Tools>Options> Formatting>  auto add commas and periods.
To erase the last thing u said say SCRATCH THAT.
 
U can also do  SCRATCH that 7 times  (to erase the last 7 things)
Say UNDO THAT to undo a command.
 
To stop recog in progress (and turn off the mike) click the small red button in the Results box.
 
U can say BOLD THAT,  CAP THAT, CORRECT THAT  (u do not have to select the text first.
 
To remove a trailing space after a word, you can say Delete Previous Character.
 
u can say  UNSELECT THAT
 
DISPLAY ACCURACY CENTER to see all tools for adding words to vocab and improving accuracy.
 
In Accuracy Center, say  "Which tool should I use.
 
Speak clearly and enunciate each word  (do NOT need to go slowly or loudly).
 
U can IMPROVE recognition by using long, well-enunciated phrases.   Doing slow, deliberate short phrases
or single words can result in MORE ERRORS cuz there's less context.
 
say TRAIN WORDS or click that in Dragon Bar if a partic word is regularly misrecognized.
 
Use the Increase Accuracy from EMail tool to add your contact names and to teach DNS
your personal writing style and vocab for sending msgs.
 
Say  OPEN COMMAND BROWSER or click it in tools in the DBar.
 
When Results box turns BLUE it means DNS thinks its a COMMAND  (it does not do this
with New-Line,  New-Para, All-Caps etc (the common stuff).
 
A good way to find out whether or not a word is in the active vocab is to type it in the VOCAB EDITOR
(say OPEN VOCABULARY EDITOR or click View/edit in DB Words menu.  If words appears in list
its already in the voca, if not, the click ADD to add it.
 
U can see JUST the WORDS U ADDED to the Vocab editor by opening it then
Open Vocabulary Editor and the select  Show Custom Words Only.
 
GIVE ME HELP  (say it at any time)
 
WHAT CAN I SAY  (will give us sample commands for ur current app).
 
Keep the MICROPHONE at the corner of your mouth and not directly in front.
About 1 cm from corner of mouth.  If its too far away, accuracy will be bad.
 
If wrong instance of a word or phrase is selected just say  SELECT AGAIN.
 
U can copy dictated text to another program by saying  CPY ALL TO CLIPBOARD the switch apps
and say  PASTE THAT.
 
If u have trouble selecting a single word then select a longer string of sords eg
if u cannot select "a"  in  "it was a dark and story might"  then select "was a dark"
 
Select punctuation by voice.  eg  u can say  "SELECT DEAR MARK COMMA.
 
I having difficulty editing text, then use Dictation Box.  select the text then say
SHOW DICTATION BOX or EDIT SELECTION.
 
When u say SPELL THAT u can use all the characters of the Windows char set WITHOUT PAUSING.
 
U can insert any UNKNOWN WORD into your doc by sapyign SPELL followed by the letter of the word or phrase
u want to insert.  U do not need to pause after SPELL.
 
To SPELL multiple words in the Spell Dialog Box.... spell each separately and say SPACEBAR to insert
a wrod break btwn each one.
 
When spelling,  u can CAP a latter, by saying CAP before u say the letter.
 
Run a spell checker before processing them in the Add Words from Doc box... this prevents
misspelled words from being added.
 
U can add multi-word phrases to the bocab... eg  say ADD NEW WORD then
"The Mayberry Tribune"  or click New in the DB Words Menu.
 
U can control the menus, buttons, and options of most Windows apps by voice ...
just say  FILE,  SAVE, OK... (or u can say  Click FILE,  CLICK SAVE etc.
 
Press the plus (+) key on the number keypad to turn the microphone on and off.
 
Insert a TAB by saying  TAB KEY or insert a SPACE by saying SPACEBAR.
 
U can say  SET FONT ARIAL14 BOLD   etc.
 
U can say  SWITCH TO PREVIOUS WINDOW OR SWITCH TO INTERNET EXPLORER.
 
MIC ON and OFF with + key.
 
Select and Say is the GREEN LIGHT that turns on is u are in a STANDARD APP.
