Greek porphrities = &nbsp;pophyry = purple + ite = stone. &nbsp;=> Latin.</p>

see 1) dark purplish-rred groundmass contain small crystals of feldspar

(quarried in ancient Egypt).</p>

2) petrology &nbsp;&nbsp;igneuous rock with corse crystals as phenocrysts in a finer-grained

groundmass.</p>
