John Rogers, "Stretchy Electronics That Can Dissolve in Your Body"

<p>
bio-integr electronics and transient electronics.</p>
<p>
smaller, faster, cheaper is what we want.</p>
<p>
we work on bio-integrated:
circuits are built on rigid wafers (always true)
how to wrap brain or heart with it or skin with computer.
how throw out the wafer. mat. sci challenges.</p>
<p>
eg brain: shows abt 4 inch wafer... but how to integrate.
current is Utah array.
modulus 150 gigapascal (silicon CMOS wafer);
brain 5 kilopascal modulus.</p>
<p>
use air hammer to put Utah array into brain.
over time: hard shard of glass in jello; continued mech irritation.</p>
<p>
Utah Array... a work horse... but can do better;</p>
<p>
want soft, shape conformal, and biocompatible;</p>
<p>
semiconductor: organic vs inorg and field effect mobility</p>
<p>
E Ink: polymers.... carbon NTs prob best... but immature;
(graphene may be irrelevant)
but can u do it with Silicon... repurpose it... prob quickest path.</p>
<p>
rigid, brittle... drop it it breaks.... bending stiffness (depends on youngs mod)
but go to 10 nm thickness... thin silicon is floppy;
v flexible; thin silicon .... good but fragile;
do heterogenous integr but combine with silicone (rubber like)</p>
<p>
print it onto a plastic substrate.... floppy, flexible and sticky.</p>
<p>
shows GaAs membranes printed onto plastic 1600 of them 100% yield.</p>
<p>
now build it onto plastic or rubber... but cannot adapt to brain...</p>
<p>
but need something that can be stretched like a rubber band...</p>
<p>
print electronics onto pre-strechted surface then let it shrink... like accordion bellows.
shows 3 stage ring oscillator; in wavy geometry; they work;</p>
<p>
use it to wrap skin or heart....(3d form when relaxed)</p>
