3D PANEL, Tuesday, April 22, 2014

3Ds are Dennett vs Hoffman vs David Chalmers on nature of consc (final debate)

they debate (Dan Dennett vs Don Hoffman) truth vs fitness...

Dan Dennett says truth and fitness merge with complex orgs like us....

Dan evolution. sculpts the affordances that matter:

Don Hoffman unlimited universes of consciousness that map onto

our limited, finite univ of consc...

Dan Dennett responds: we have invented microscopes, telescopes to extend our perception;

Don Hoffman: next we need to give up space and time themselves;

(as our limited scientif viewpoint has expanded since the Renaissance.)

Q why is it important to you

A chalmers: important to me cuz it's important period;

dan: many people trying to solve the easy problem (and the hard problem does not exist)

dan: many people don't want to have the problem reduced or solved

becuz it does harm to morality or beauty/aesthetics.

stu hameroff states: "future time reversal has been proven in a talk by X"

(ie being able to predict events that have not yet happened)

dan dennett answers "the (only) fact is that X will be giving a talk on it... period!" big laugh.
