note:

study in women age 50 to 79; 87,000 women

recruited btwn 1994 and 1998

food questionnaire at baseline and after 3 years...

1049 cases of ischmeic stroke

transfat hazard ratio was 1.49 p = .0002

assoc remained signif after adjust for bmi, smoking and phys activity

and even for health condit... hx of CAD, DM and fruit/veg intake.

also no interaction with statin use or HR replacement.

alos note: NO SIGNIF assoc to any other type of fat

raising doubt that dietary fats act thru dyslipidemia to cause cereb infarction.

study did show some incr risk with satfat but not signif.

its poss. that satfat can incr risk but magnitude not big enuf to show stat. signif.

also did NOT see inverse assoc with polyunsat fat.

Aspirin use appeared to lower the stroke risk. Among 67,288 non–aspirin users, the HR for ischemic stroke in the highest versus lowest quintile of trans fat intake was 1.66, but among 19,736 aspirin users, it was 0.95. "That suggests that aspirin use may counteract the potential adverse effect of trans fatty acids on ischemic stroke," commented Dr. He.
