Moore's law

Jan 12, 2011 02:37 PM

Note this critical fact about Moore's Law (from Carl Hewitt talk at CS 380 in Jan 2011)

Moore's Law for computation now takes the following form:

Clock frequency is no longer increasing exponentially. (it is only slowly increasing)

Instead, the number of cores is increasing exponentially.

Note: this accords with Bill Dally's prediction (he REALLY knows: CTO of Nvidia and head of stfd CSD)

(I also believe that the shrinking of dimensions will level off within 15 years or so)

see Mukesh Khare's talk (IBM New York) on CMOS and successors.

Future will follow the direction of brains: 1) redundant 2) fault tolerant 3) massively parallel (inconsistency tolerant)

4) adaptive (depending on task 5) responsive to needs and to task 6) self-diagnosing/ self-repairing.
