Wonderful PBS show on MUIR, mentioned to me by Howard Weamer
(see trail people 2012) who stars as Muir in some scenes (as an old man).

1849 John Muir emigrates to the New World from Scotland... goes to Wisconsin.
father was a strict Calvinist.

few months in school only... self - taught;
mother taught him.

Muir read intensely...
discovered Alexander von Humboldt  (as famous as Napolean in mid 19th century).
von Humboldt was Muir's boyhood hero.

left home at 22... an inventor...

applied to Univ of Wisconsin...

discovered geology and botany  jean carr nurtured him  (wife of his prof)

then went to work in a factory...  "doomed to live in a noisy commerical cetners"

R eye gone  (tip of a file flew into his R eye and tempor. blinded his R eye);

"he will surely place you where your work is"

after recovery, he walks a thousand miles to the Gulf;

called by God to explore and grateful for it...
