I am AG (genotype) : which says... likely to be TOLERANT to Lactose

due to lactase persistence (but may be intoler. due to other reasons)

(intolerant would be GG and presumably even more tolerant would be AA)

The A version is relativ recent and is rare in Asians and in Africans.

This gene encodes the lactase protein.

Note: incr risk of hypothyroidism as of apr 12 2012...

GG = sl. higher odds of devel primary hypothyr.

RR was only 1.35 .

Parkinson's Disease = PD;  DECR risk!!    my risk is 1.0% btwn age 30 and 79;

average risk is 1.6% . Coffee or tea is assoc with REDUCED RISK of PD.

Physic. Activity reduces risk. There are a few rare mutations in a small # of genes

assoc with PD.

BRCA cancer mutations... I do NOT have these.

Kidney stones... increased risk (I had one marker AG... conferring sl incr odds of devel kidney stones)

study in japanese. odds ratio was only 1.19 . but on 4 other markers I had typical risk!

I have TYPICAL RISK for Coronary Heart Disease, ie

47.2 out of 100 men of European ethnicity who share Bob Blum's genotype will develop coronary heart disease

btwn the ages of 45 and 79. This means odds of developing the disease during the age range, assuming one

is free of CHD at the bottom of the age range.

Genes vs Environment: heritability for CHD ranges from 39% to 56% depending on the exact subtype

of heart diesase. Genetic and environmental factors contribute about equally to risk for CHD.

Genetic factors contribute sl more to risk in men than in women.
