Singularity What is it 2007

<p>Jan 3, 2008 8:44 PM

&#160;

Vernor Vinge created the term Singularity to describe it ... like the center of a black hole;

world breaks down, can't see into it.

&#160;

How will it happen? My view: AI blank slate populated with knowledge from Wiki/Internet/Powerset.

Recursive learning from the internet.

Q to <b>Ron Kaplan:</b> what would it take for <b>Powerset to LEARN</b> (recursively self-improve).

&#160;

Many self-improving loops: &#160;AI altering its own source code; &#160;<b>bio-enhanced human working on further bio-enhancement</b>

including brain-computer inferface. <b>Bio-enhanced human working on hotest computer hardware with hotest interface.</b>

&#160;

My thought - must incorporate vision - learning from movies

&#160;

Computers: ten million times faster processing and a million times faster conduction speed.

Socrates to Modern times = 22 hours; &#160;one year = 31 seconds === million fold speed up in thinking.

&#160;

Enitre 5 million year transition from primates to humans gave up 3X brain capacity and 6X prefrontal cortex.

&#160;

Smart AI coops millions of computers on internet.

&#160;

Humans are not just bigger chimps; we are better chimps.

&#160;

Smarter, faster, self-improving.

&#160;

Key moment is the rise of smarter than human intelligence. &#160;Who is now smarter than human? &#160;Jurvetson, Hawkins.

thin, fast ... read a lot; organizations.

&#160;

Chain reaction; &#160;avalanche with a pebble; &#160;Singularity is an attractor.

&#160;

Euclid Elements: &#160;Library of Alexandria around 300 BC (Hellenistic Period).

Francis Bacon.

&#160;

Human intel: more than an effective way for apes to get bananas.

We are not msart enuf to predict impact of superintelligence - we are like apes.

&#160;

Any science problem benefits from having a few Einsteins or Edisons dumped into it - but still requires time

for R and D, manufac, commericaliz. and distribution.

&#160;

Positive feedback dynamic of singularity - smart minds create still smarter minds.

&#160;

Not neces. US vs THEN; &#160;superintellig. could lend a helping hand to humans. play on the same team.

Humans could and would want to participate:

We should be wary of confident predictions that transhumanity will still be limited by the need to seek venture capital from humans or that Artificial Intelligences

will be slowed to the rate of their human assistants.

&#160;

?A smarter-than-human AI absorbs all unused computing power on the then-existent Internet in a matter of hours; uses this computing power and smarter-than-human design ability to crack the<b> protein folding problem for artificial proteins</b> in a few more hours; emails separate rush orders to a dozen online peptide synthesis labs, and in two days receives via FedEx a set of proteins which, mixed together, self-assemble into an acoustically controlled nanodevice which can build more advanced nanotechnology.?

&#160;

enforcing servitude on the AI or coming up with a perfect moral code to hardwire.

The Singularity Institute?s mid-term mission is solving the problem of reflectivity ? creating an AI that thinks about how to think
