How does know. change? how does infant with no words in vocab at age 10 months

learn first word at 12 months and 200 words by age 24 months.

must use external behavior to get at cog processes.

behav. is created from interac. btwn child and TASK.

formal models are useful cuz they require specifying the TASK,

the stim, the know. brot by the child, and how they all interact.

how do indiv behaviors accumulate to create LT patterns

WORD LEARNING

Btwn age 18 and 30 months: productive vocab incr 10X and comes to be dominated by

object names.

she believes in SHAPE-BIAS: kids shown a ZUP will match it to other objects of

same shape rather than other objects of same color or material.

SHAPE-BIAS learned early in noun learning...

step 1... kids larn that BALL refers to round red thing that bounces

while CUP refers to thing he drinks from.

step 2 sees others in categories andlearns that ALL BALLS are ROUND...

now child can apply name to entire category.

step 3 second orger generalizaiton:... solid things are in categories well organized by similarity in SHAPE.

this is when we see a SHAPE-BIAS as the kid learns the 2nd order generalization.

step 4: kid can use this new word learning bias to acquire new object names quickly...

she invokes connectionist network literat.

and that early training with nouns that name categors of solid things organized by similarity in shape can lead to accel voca devel.

So how do individ naming experiences accumulate to create devel.

HOW Childr. use their repres know. in RT...

kids who saw more variable exemplars of a categor...

a large white paper bucke, and a moder size orange cloth pumpkin bucket and a v large plastic bucet to teach

the word

bucket learned twice as many words after training as kids who saw a less diverse range of exemplars.

a Cascading Process...

cascade that creates word learning.

the course of word learning builds from effects at the level of indiv noun decisions that accum on a

moment-to-moment timescale and structure subsequent word learning behaviors.
