this was a meticulous study (reviewed in Harvard Heart Letter in Dec 2006 which I now summarize)

by German researchers. Key was to interview family members on scene.

406 cases of arrest.

Warning signs were surprisingly common. CP, sob, N/V, diz sometimes HOURS before.

In 90% of cases symptoms lasted more than 5 mnutes.

Only 25% had true out of the blue arrests with no prior sxs.

Most had had prior attaacks. Two-thirds of those who collapsed had been prev dx'd with heart disease and

had survived prior arrest or had angina or other signs of ht dis.
