See soils.usda.gov David McDonald from the Seattle Public Utilities gave a talk on Res. Channel
describing the functions and importance of soil.
Soil is spongy ... it holds onto water and slowly releases it; it is also like activated charcoal ... it cleans out toxins;
it has has a huge population of microflora that add nutrients.

Prof of Ecoscience: Denman Forest Resources: UW.
Excellent, v. entertaining speaker ... good sense of humor; quite realistic and inclusive in his approach.

Cartoon of two guys looking at a tree: a) an ecologist b) a timber guy.
Two radically different approaches to forest management
a) maximize biodiversity, maximize natural state of forest
b) maximize wood production for return on investment.

Forestry is a SOCIAL enterprise. (I went into forestry to escape peope ... be in nature; he laughs)

1) Globalization of wood production. Big forestry biz is tired of confronting
pro-eco groups in perpetuity.
Agrobusiness model. Large companies like Weyerhauser are selling their US holdings in
Pac. NW and Tennessee and planting forests of Monter Pine etc. in Urugauy, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil ...
cheaper land, cheaper labor. (they move to SUBtropical areas in S. hemisphere.

2) Our lands: much is privately held (100 to 1000 acres, etc) and gets sold to subdividers.

3) Much of the sold land has been so modified that it needs to be actively managed in order to recover.

4) One of most important aspects of forest is providing clean, abundant water.
Also, preserving biodiversity.
